This week's focus is the Three Little Pigs
LITERACY
If you don't have a paper copy of this book here is a YouTube version for you to share with your child.
Who are the characters?
How many pigs are there? Can you count them and show me on your fingers?
Why did they have to build their own houses?
What happened to the house of straw/sticks/bricks? Why was the brick house stronger?
Why is the wolf scary?
Encourage your child to join in with the repeated refrains - eg,'Little pig, little pig! Let me come in!' and 'No, no, no! Not by the hairs on my chinny, chin chin! I'll not let you in!'
MATHEMATICS
Lots of counting activities this week - counting the stairs in your house, buttons on a coat, fingers on your hand, etc. If you can get out into the garden, count steps, jumps, hops, etc.
UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD
We are going to look at how houses are different around the world.
Can your child draw your house and talk about the different parts - perhaps you could label the parts - door, window, roof, bricks, chimney, etc.
Build a house for a pig - use Duplo, Lego, Stickle Bricks, etc. Make sure the Little Pig has a door and a window and he can fit inside!
We will also be thinking about what we need to pack in a suitcase when we are staying overnight at a friend's/relatives house. Which things are important? Which things are a treat?
Remember to take any photographs and send them onto me!
FINGER GYM
This week we are working with play dough/plasticine - if you don't have play dough, you could use either of these play dough recipes (a cook and non-cook option).
When making cooked playdough, use the same ingredients but with a sachet or 2tsp of cream of tartar. The amount of flour should also be reduced to 1 cup. Put all ingredients into a bowl, stir thoroughly and place in the microwave or heat on the hob. Keep an eye as the ingredients start to come together. Keep stirring.
There are lots of differing ways on the internet - we tend to do it differently even within the nursery!
We are going to make little pigs. We will talk about rolling, squeezing, squashing, pressing and joining.
If you can't make play dough, you could try this Funky Fingers activity. Draw a wiggly line and ask your child to place (using a nip, nip grip) any small objects you have around the house. These could be toys or smaller objects such as beads, beans, frozen peas, etc.
ONGOING ACTIVITIES
Counting on and back to 10
Number recognition
Name recognition and beginning to write letters in own name
Joe Wicks on his YouTube channel on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9.00am
WELL BEING FOCUS
We would like your child to FaceTime/Zoom/Skype, etc a family member/friend and tell them something they've done this week. They could tell that person what they've had for tea or how they are feeling. We are encouraging the children's use of language and developing their listening skills.
We are looking forward to seeing what you've all been up to. Please remember that these are only ideas. If you've completed a puzzle or been for a walk or bike ride or played a game, photographs would be lovely.
