RMcCabe - Diwali: The Festival of Light

This week we have been thinking about the Hindu festival of Diwali, the Festival of Light. On Wednesday we sampled some Indian food, the children had the opportunity to try onion bajis, vegetable samosas, garlic naan bread, pilau rice and poppadoms. It was lovely to see so many children enjoying the food! After, they tidied up and washed their own plates.

Here the children are enjoying some of the other activities this week:

Acting out the story of Rama and Sita with masks in the outside classroom.

Trying on traditional clothes in the role play.

Taking a number card and adding one more, then counting out the correct number of Divas to check their answer.

Making rice, pebble and shape Rangoli patterns to bring good luck.

Writing Diwali cards to their friends.

(Proud teacher moment!) Just look at the independent writing table on a Friday afternoon. These children have chosen to write adjectives to describe their favourite characters from the Diwali story of Rama and Sita. It is great to see them become excited about writing and listen to them talk about vocabulary.
