Nursery - Chinese New Year and Celebrations

 Chinese New Year and Celebrations

Here is a lovely video about Chinese New Year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVPHdFX9iHY

What did Nian look like?

What 3 things was Nian afraid of?

Do you remember the story of the animals racing? Who won the race?

What special foods might be eaten at Chinese New Year?

What is inside the red envelopes?

Understanding the World

We are thinking about how we observe important celebrations in our family - these could be christenings, marriages, birthdays, Christmas, etc. This is the perfect time to pull out the photograph albums!

Talk about

  • why people are celebrating
  • clothes that people might be wearing
  • food that might be eaten
  • presents and why they are given
Mathematics

This week we will be making and following patterns. We are going to do this using construction focusing initially on 2 alternate colours.

EAD

This week we are exploring colour mixing, using coloured water with pipettes or paints. This could be done on paper, plates, into ice cube trays or even outside on the pathway where the paint (with a little help!) should wash away.

We will also be baking a simple cake or some biscuits (or you could decorate a biscuit with some icing sugar and sprinkles). This covers so many areas - communication (listening to and following instructions), maths (weight, counting), art and design (decorating), physical development (manipulating spoons, rolling), understanding the world (talking about birthday, christening, wedding cakes) PSED (self confidence and self awareness).

Well Being

We are going to be physical this week!

5.2.21 Reception - Cinderella

 Cinderella

This week our learning has been based on the Traditional Tale of Cinderella.

Chidren have been working hard in school, and at home, to complete the activities. We have thought about describing the characters in the story, ordering glass slippers by size (and using our ordinal numbers underneath), making 'wand' fruit kebabs, using our 2D shapes to make a castle, as well as planning a banquet dinner.

Have a look at our amazing efforts...

Well-being Wednesday!

Hello ☺

We hope you are all having a good week so far. This week is Children's Mental Health Week. This year's theme is Express Yourself and is all about encouraging children and adults to find creative ways to share thoughts, feelings and emotions through activities like music, art, dance or photography.

Take a look at some of these brilliant ideas to help you all feel healthy and happy, this week and beyond!

Keep smiling and having fun! ☺

NURSERY - Chinese New Year

 Chinese New Year

Here is a link to the CBeebies website.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/chinese-new-year

There are videos showing how a family clean their house in preparation for the Chinese New Year celebrations, a family watching a parade and firecracker display and the story of how the animals decided who would have which year named after them.

On the right side of the page are further links to a quiz, CBeebies radio, how to make a Chinese Dragon and a video of a Chinese lion dance.

Some questions to ask after you've watched the video on the animals race -

How may animals were arguing?

Can you remember all the animals?

What did the Jade Emperor tell the animals to do?

Who won the race? How?

Can you draw one of the characters from the story? Which was your favourite animal? Here are some pictures from last year's children.

MATHEMATICS

We will be looking at shape using tangrams. Tangrams are
Chinese geometrical puzzle consisting of a square cut into seven pieces which can be arranged to make various other shapes.

If you don't have 2D shapes or a tangram set, you can print out a set following this link

https://filefolderfun.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/TangramPack.pdf

There are online versions of this, but it is tricky to manipulate the shapes and your child will probably need lots of help turning the shapes.

If you can't access any of these, just look at shapes. Can your child name them? Can they say how many sides each shape has?

Understanding The World

Can you find China on a world map?

China has an enormously long wall called the Great Wall of China. Here are some pictures.

Can your child make a long wall out of construction? Can they add a watchtower for a guard to look out of?

We will be trying some Chinese food this week - noodles, rice, prawn crackers and spring rolls. Maybe you could eat some Chinese food and send in some photographs.

Expressive Art and Design

This is a link to a Chinese New Year action song

We will be making a Chinese dragon. Once again here are lots of different ideas which you can try depending upon what you have in your house.

FINGER GYM

Using chopsticks or sticks to move the bottle lids out of the container (you could do this with or without the water).

Hope you are all keeping well.
