The Cupcake Cafe

Whilst working in The Cupcake Café we have written lists, orders

and recipes.

Run, run as fast as you can...

This week we really enjoyed baking gingerbread men
with Mrs Laidler.

We had to measure and mix the ingredients,
roll and cut the shapes out of the dough.

The difficult part was being patient whilst they were cooking! Mmmm!! They smelt really good!

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

This week's traditional story was The Three Billy Goats Gruff.
We have enjoyed sharing different versions of the story and one of our favourites was The Three Billy Goats Fluff.

After reading The Three Billy Goats Fluff, we decided that the goats needed to be quiet when they crossed the bridge, as the troll had a headache (that's why he was so bad tempered!). We investigated different materials to find out which would be best to put on the bridge to stop the loud trip-trapping. During our investigation, we found out that the fur fabric was best because there was hardly any noise when the goats crossed the bridge. The troll would stop being grumpy and they could all live happily ever after!

We have enjoyed exploring bridges and used Duplo to build bridges across the river.

We also used a range of natural materials to create footprints made by the troll and the goats.

These are just a few examples of the fun and learning from this week!

Sneaky peak

Here's a sneaky peak at some of the exciting activities we have ready for next week.  We are going to be learning all about Chinese New Year.

Do you know anything about Chinese New Year?

Tools!

Mr Lockley came to fix one of our Nursery doors. The Nursery children were fascinated and asked Mr Lockley lots of questions. He then showed all the children some of the different tools in his tool box, they were really interested in his spirit level so Mr Lockley went around the outside classroom showing them how to use it.
Thank you Mr Lockley!

Teamwork Toucans!

On a beautiful, cold sunny afternoon the boys were happily playing football in the outside classroom when disaster struck! The ball got stranded on the sandpit cover, now what should they do? They all rightly know that they can't go onto the sandpit cover, so they all came running over shouting
“Help Mrs Jarrett, the football is on the sandpit!”
This is when we saw a real opportunity for some team work problem solving, I explained to them that they had to get it themselves but couldn't stand on the cover because the sharks would get them! What then ensued from this one comment was amazing!
First Harry tried the drill “No! That won't reach” he called.
Next, it was Luca’s turn and he tried a spade carefully reaching over towards the ball but still unable to reach it!
Jake then called to everyone “We need something longer”, what a great idea this was, everyone raced around the outside classroom looking for something longer that might reach.
Fridolin found a stick, brilliant, what a good idea, he reached out to get the ball but it just wasn't quite long enough! So then Jake got an even longer stick, all the while quite a crowd was gathering around the sandpit to see what all the excitement was about!
Hooray! Jake’s stick was long enough but, oh no when he touched the ball it just kept moving and rolling away from him. So what to do next...Harry had a brilliant idea, he went and fetched a plank from near the shed and with the help of some friends carefully laid it out from the edge to just where the ball was resting. Jake then tentatively tiptoed along the plank being careful not to fall into the sea and the jaws of those angry sharks and reached the ball!
There were big cheers all round!

What great teamwork! Well done everyone!

Wellies!

We’d like to say a big thank you to those who have sent wellies into school for your children this term!

Some of the children have enjoyed their first trip to the allotment with Mrs Bulleyment. They worked the soil to prepare it for spring and were amazed to find some left over potatoes, carrots and onions hiding in the ground from harvest. They will learn what plants need to grow as well as how to carry and use their tools safely.

Run run as fast as you can...!

The children and I wanted to share with you our favourite part of our Gingerbread Man week, decorating our own gingerbread men and eating them. They were really yummy. Here are some pictures of the children working hard to create the perfect biscuit. Using tweezers for intricate jobs not only helps to strengthen their hand and wrist muscles but develops their fine motor accuracy at the same time, ultimately improving their pencil control when they write.

Favourite stories

This week we have been looking at the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and have come to love this story.  We have had lots of comments from parents about how much the children have been talking about it at home!  It has become Emma's favourite new story and she was really excited when she saw it in the shop because she wanted to share it with her Mummy and Daddy.

What's your favourite traditional tale?

Can you send me a picture that I can post on the blog?

The Gingerbread Man

Baking Gingerbread Biscuits

This week we have all enjoyed baking gingerbread biscuits.

First, we mixed the ingredients together.

Then we rolled the mixture and used a cutter to make a gingerbread man shape.

Finally we decorated our biscuits and put them in the oven to cook.

We were all very excited to eat our gingerbread biscuits.

I hope they tasted as good as they smelt!

Can we fix it?

One afternoon a visitor came into Nursery and broke our chair, so  we decided to make some tools. James, Bentley and Harry got to work straight away.
“Look I have made a hammer” Harry exclaimed.
Sophie quietly made a hammer and began tapping the chair.  Jake and Archie came to see what was going on and asked
“Can we help?”
Immediately they both set to work making a hammer and screwdriver.
“ I can screw!” Jake said to Archie.
Phoebe and Scarlett spent time working together to repair the chair.
“I will do this side” Scarlett stated.
“James you can help us fix the chair” Pheobe politely whispered.

Meanwhile, Harry was sat thinking, spending time working out which way the pieces go. The Foreman Harry made sure everyone was keeping busy.
Excuse me, this piece needs fixing first.”
“I am fixing it” Bentley replied.

Later a new apprentice joined the group, Luca asked
“Can I help”
“This is my chair leg” Harry exclaimed,
“Make a tool” Harry ordered. William enjoyed making a screwdriver and a hammer and began tapping the chairs and finding all the screws.

Little Bear's Porridge

We are loving learning all about Goldilocks and the Three Bears, we have porridge everywhere.  Who knew it could be used for so many different things!

All the children have really enjoyed making porridge this week, red group even went one step further and decided to add different fruit to theirs, after a suggestion from one of the children.
I am really proud of everyone for trying it even if they weren't sure they were going to like it, well done Nursery!

The Three Little Pigs

The Three Little Pigs

This week we have enjoyed lots of different activities based on The Three Little Pigs.

We sequenced pictures so that we could retell the story.

We built houses for the little pigs using tap-tap shapes.

We used little pigs to help us with our counting and maths problem solving.

We also made our own tape measures and took them into our construction site role play area to measure different objects.

We've had a wonderful week reading different versions of The Three Little Pigs. One of our favourites was The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig.

Storytelling

Earlier this week Year 4 visited the Nursery class to share a story.
The older children then talked with the Nursery children about books
and the kind of stories they enjoyed listening to.

Year 4 will now be writing an adventure story which will be shared with
their Nursery partner, who will feature as a main characters in the story!

We can't wait to read these stories in Nursery.

Next week

Can you guess what story we are going to be learning about next week?

Our Traditional Tales WOW Day!

Once upon a time...

To launch our new topic on Traditional Tales we have been looking at the story of The Jolly Postman. On his round he met many of the
characters we know so well, Goldilocks and The Three Bears the Giant,  Cinderella and even the Big Bad Wolf.

During this week we have learnt many new words and phrases that will help us retell and write our own versions of these tales.
We can’t wait to learn more.

To bring the week to an amazing end we all got dressed up as the
characters from these Traditional Tales.

They all lived happily ever after.

Thank you to all of our parents/carers for making it such a fantastic dress up day.
