Spring is on the way!

Hunting for Signs of Spring

As part of our Outdoor Learning with Mrs Bulleyment
we went searching for signs of spring
Buds had started to grow on the trees, green shoots were starting to grow out of the ground and we even found
flowers on some of the crocuses.

What have we grown?

This week’s story was The Enormous Turnip. It inspired us to try and grow our own seeds. All the children were given mystery seeds and cup to share with a friend. They filled the cup with soil and sprinkled the seeds into the cup. Next, they watered their seeds. Finally, they looked for a sunny place to put them, the window ledge was a popular choice. Here are our results!

They turned out to be cress seeds!

Numbers!

In an attempt to distract the children from the arrival of Doris, I subtly left out the giant number tiles after the children had got excited over ordering numbers during welcome time! The children loved it and quickly worked together to order them to 24.  They then spent some time jumping along them reciting the numbers as they went.  I then started putting the correct number of objects onto some of them, everyone thought this was a brilliant idea and soon followed suit.

After the children had exhausted this job we then rolled out some paper and started to draw our own number lines.

I have loved seeing how excited all the children are about numbers, well done everybody!

The Three Little Pigs

On a windy February morning green group took the three little pigs and the big bad wolf into the sandpit. We built a straw house, a stick house and a brick house. Imogen picked up the spade and started to dig a hole for the straw house. Harry C, Harry W, Isla, Millie, Joseph and Eliza collected sticks for the stick house. Isobel and Albert set to work on the brick house.

Isobel and Albert collected the balance blocks and made an enclosure, then used the pattern rollers to create a brick pattern. At first Albert walked on his pattern but soon realised he was making footprints so he carefully walked around his masterpiece.

The stick house was challenging but Eliza soon sorted the group out and carefully started burying the sticks in the sand. Harry and Joseph soon followed and carefully pushed the sticks deep into the sand.

Meanwhile, Imogen worked independently on the straw house putting the straw into the hole so it didn't blow away. She then suggested we might need a road, so the whole group built a road out of planks and pipe.

Happily,  we told the story of the Three Little Pigs, singing
“Little pig, little pig, let me in. Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin. Well we will huff and we will puff and we will blow your house in”
Then with a great big puff the children blew as hard as they could.
The wolf then climbed into the brick house and we all screamed as we fell into the pot!

Now the scene was set for their own adventures and the children started to retell the story in their own words
“Not by my chinny, chin chin” Isla exclaimed.
“I will blow your house down” Harry shouted.
“You can stay in our house if you don't tell the wolf” Harry W confirmed.
Eliza told Isla I am going to build a bigger wall so the wolf cannot get in”
Albert told Isobel “I am building a wall”
Isobel replied “Can I help, shall we build a stick house?”
“I am going to make a hole for the wolf to go in” Imogen shouted.

As Harry tried to climb into the brick house growling like a wolf, Isla exclaimed “You cannot get in, we have not finished yet. We need to make a big mountain”

What a lovely story that shows how much you have all loved learning about The Three Little Pigs.

Half Term Fun

I hope you have all had a lovely, fun filled half term and are all ready and excited to come back to school this week. We have missed you all.
I have enjoyed receiving emails this week showing me what you have been getting up to in your holidays.

Finley has been busy baking some yummy fairy cakes. I love your decorations Finley, I wonder if there is any left for me?!

Nicole loved learning all about the Three Little Pigs last week and wanted to share the story lots at home with her Mummy and Daddy. She loved it so much that Nicole and her Mummy made some masks so she could act out the story. I can't wait for you to tell me the story next week and you could use our masks to act out the story in Nursery.

Amy looks like she has had a busy half term week, counting up all her pennies (I wonder what she is going to spend them on) and she has even had time to practise her phonics on the computer.

I am looking forward to seeing you all next week and hearing about your exciting half terms.

Reading with Miss France's Class

We were so lucky to be invited to join Miss France’s class on the last day before half term! Each child shared their favourite book with a Reception reading buddy. We really enjoyed listening to them read and making new friends.

See you soon!

Who's Been Eating My Porridge?

Before half term, the children were immersing themselves in the world of Goldilocks and the three bears.

It all started one day when a little broken chair appeared on our carpet…
Where had it come from? Who’s chair was it? Why was it broken? – were all questions the children discussed and we concluded it must have been Goldilocks!

Using hats and small world, the children acted out the story, remembering key lines like “Who’s been sitting in my chair?” and “This bed is just right!” They have been developing their story telling language by performing to their friends. They have investigated porridge with Mrs Denton to find the perfect consistency, not too gooey or too sticky, not too sloppy or too chunky… the children have enjoyed challenges sorting small, medium and large items and doubling the bears’ dinners.

I wonder what our next story will be…

Chinese New Year!

We really enjoyed learning all about how people celebrate Chinese New Year. We watched videos of dances, parades and families getting ready for their special holiday. The children all tried different kinds of Chinese food – egg fried rice, prawn crackers, spring rolls and noodles. They found they all liked different things.

They have been using the puppet theater to act out the animals’ race as well as solving money problems and making coin purses and paper dragons!

Be bright, Be seen!

We having been looking at how to stay safe in the dark and by the road! We talked about always holding our grown ups hand and not running! Everyone told me that we must stop, look and listen when we get to a road and that we must always walk because we don't want to fall! In the dark we must wear bright clothes so the cars can see us!

We wish you all a lovely half term break and remember to stay safe!

The Nursery Team

Gymnastic superstar!

We are loving all the children bringing their certificates in to celebrate with us!
Today Emma brought in her gymnastic certificate, she told us she loves gymnastics and that jumping was her favourite thing to do there! She even gave us a demonstration, the next Beth Tweddle!

Exploring the snow!

The children were so excited about the snow when they came into Nursery today! So we thought this would be a great opportunity to go out and have some fun and explore, it didn't matter that there was only a little bit!
We found our wellies, got our coats, gloves and hats on and wrapped up warm!
They loved going outside and hunting for the snow, picking it up, touching it and seeing what would happen when we warmed it up!
We then warmed ourselves up inside over milk and snack!

Don't forget to bring your wellies in, if you haven't already!

Keeping Safe on the Internet

Today we have been learning about staying
safe on the internet.

Celebrating

Phoebe was really excited to bring her swimming certificate in today.  She told us that she had to jump in, swim to the deep end and dunk her head in the water.  Phoebe said she loves swimming and dunking her head is the best part!

Well done Phoebe, we are all really proud of you.

Remember if you have something you would like us to celebrate and share on the blog to bring it in or email it to sarah.jarrett@fosse-way-academy.org

Happy Chinese New Year

This week we have been learning about how
Chinese New Year is celebrated.

A big part of the celebrations is enjoying food
with your friends and family.

Mrs Tunstall, Mrs Davis, Miss Rose and
Mrs Bishop cooked and served us stir fried
vegetables in black bean sauce.

Getting to grips with the chopsticks was
the trickiest part!

We didn’t let that get in the way
of us enjoying our food!!

Hilda Pang

We were so excited today when Jonah brought in his Mummy's very special Chinese doll, Hilda Pang. He was so proud to show everyone.

This is her story...

This is Hilda, she is very special and was my Mummy's doll. She was born in Hong Kong and lived there for 3 years with my Mummy. She now lives with my Grandma in Cherry Willingham. I like to play with her at Grandma's house. She has special clothes and a passport like me.

We looked at where Hong Kong is on the map and looked carefully at her passport and talked about where we have been with our passports.

Thank you so much for bringing her in to meet us.
